Ray back in reckoning

George Ray comes back into the reckoning for Crewe when they host Bristol City at Gresty Road.

The Alex did just fine without the centre-back when he was away on Wales Under-21s duty last weekend as they ended a run of six games without a win to defeat Preston 2-0 at Deepdale.

With them keeping a clean sheet for the first time in Sky Bet League One this season, it remains to be seen whether Ray will be included while fellow central defender Harry Davis (knee) is likely to be another week away from a return.

Mathias Pogba (knee) is on the comeback trail but a return before Christmas seems more likely and a hip injury will keep teenager Ryan Colclough out.

Bristol City will assess captain Sam Baldock ahead of the trip.

The former West Ham striker has been struggling with a groin injury but trained on Thursday and the Robins hope he will be available as they search for their first Sky Bet League One victory of the season.

But the game will come too soon for veteran defender Louis Carey, who is recovering from a virus and is expected to return to training next week.

Centre-back James Wilson has returned to Ashton Gate following the end of his loan spell at Cheltenham while former Rotherham striker Ryan Taylor also comes into contention after coming through two development games.
