Crewe 2-0 Chesterfield: Match Report

12 March 2011 17:59
Spireites stunned at Crewe Clayton Donaldson netted his 20th goal of the season as Crewe stunned runaway league leaders Chesterfield with a 2-0 win. Danny Shelley scored a late free-kick to seal the game as Crewe claimed their first clean sheet in 14 games and the Spireites saw their lead cut to 10 points. Dean Smalley and Craig Davies had shots easily saved by Crewe goalkeeper Rhys Taylor as the leaders made the early running. Donaldson nearly gave Crewe the lead when he cut inside and unleashed a shot which deflected off Gregor Robertson and hit the upright. But Donaldson did put the Alex in the driving seat before half-time when he picked up Luke Murphy's pass, bamboozled Robertson and netted with a low finish. Taylor made a string of superb saves to deny the Spireites after the break. First he saved at the feet of Danny Whitaker, before he dived low to palm out a fierce Davies shot. The Crewe keeper then somehow kept out Dean Morgan from close range. Crewe rode their luck though when Whitaker hit a superb effort off the upright before Jack Lester fired the rebound over from 10 yards out. But substitute Shelley sealed the game with a long-range daisy-cutter free-kick with four minutes to go.
