Debutants make mark for Swindon in victory over Crewe

Wes Thomas and Nick Ajose made quick impressions on their Swindon debuts as the front men bagged late strikes to secure a 3-1 win at struggling Crewe.

Robins boss Mark Cooper handed starts to new recruits Thomas - on loan from Birmingham - and Ajose at Gresty Road, but his side were on the defensive for large spells against Crewe, who have failed to register a win in their opening six games and have now sunk to the bottom of League One.

Ryan Colclough forced Swindon goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux to tip over and, from the resulting corner, Raphael Rossi-Branco cleared Ben Nugent's header off the line.

Vigouroux then produced a magnificent piece of agility to keep out midfielder Chris Atkinson's volley just before half-time.

Former Crewe loanee Ajose was left red faced with embarrassment as he side-footed wide when faced with finishing into an empty net after home keeper Ben Garratt was left stranded.

And the hosts made Swindon pay in the 61st minute with a fine piece of finishing from on-loan Swansea midfielder Adam King, who drove into the top corner.

Swindon hit back three minutes later, though, with an equally fine strike from substitute Tom Smith, who found the far corner.

And Thomas nudged the Wiltshire side ahead with a fine finish in the 82nd minute, taking Fabien Robert's pass and crashing a right-footer into the roof of the net past Garratt.

Ajose sealed victory when he hit a third in stoppage time, blasting into the top corner.
