Crewe 1-0 Hereford

22 August 2009 06:24
Crewe skipper Billy Jones scored the winner as his side beat Hereford.A tug on Calvin Zola by Darren Dennehy earned Crewe a spot-kick and Jones had his initial shot saved before reacting quickly to nod in the rebound. Zola almost doubled the home side's lead after he bamboozled Darren Jones but he saw keeper Adam Bartlett keep out his near-post shot. Bartlett recovered well to deny Joel Grant from the rebound as Crewe avoided any real scares on the way to the win. Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarsson told BBC Radio Stoke: "We needed to finish our chances, we had good chances in the second half to extend our lead. "We were more solid and more disciplined and at the back and now it's paying. "I wanted to get the second goal, and we pushed them from the start of the second half to try and kill the game".
