Loan star Ness cuts it for Crewe

Jamie Ness stunned leaders Bristol City with the goal which secured basement club Crewe a shock 1-0 victory - their first win in seven games.

The Stoke City loanee drove in from 25 yards in the 73rd minute as Crewe capitalised once City defender Derrick Williams had been sent off early in the second-half for his second yellow-card offence.

The leaders were at full stretch coping with bustling Crewe striker Uche Ikpeazu, who tested City goalkeeper Frank Fielding on several occasions in the first half.

Fielding made a superb near-post block to keep out an effort from Ikpeazu as Crewe threatened.

Steve Davis' side were also glad of some fine work from their young goalkeeper, Ben Garratt. The England youth international tipped over an effort from Aaron Wilbraham.

City's leading scorer was guilty of a bad miss after a cross had eluded Garratt only for Wilbraham to miscue from close range.

Defender Williams' rash challenge on Ikpeazu reduced City to 10 men five minutes after the break and Crewe's Leeds loanee Nicky Ajose went close to capitalising when he drove just wide.

Kieran Agard spurned a great chance for the visitors when he blazed over from 15 yards, but Ness made it count when he despatched a superb shot into the far corner.

Crewe substitute George Cooper wasted the chance of a second when he shot wide with just Fielding to beat.
