Cobblers failed in Calvin coup - Cardoza

Chairman David Cardoza has revealed Northampton failed in a bid to sign Crewe striker Calvin Zola on loan last week. The Congolese forward rejected a move to Shrewsbury at the weekend and Burton have also confirmed their interest in signing the 25-year-old. Cardoza revealed Zola is not prepared to leave Gresty Road until January and has not ruled out making another approach for the player in the New Year. He told the Northampton Chronicle: "We were hopeful of getting Zola last week but I think so were a lot of other clubs," said Cardoza. "It's a possible iron in the fire and we're also looking at another striker who I can't name, who is injured at the moment. "We wanted to get him (Zola) on loan but he doesn't want to move until January, so we might have to wait until then, and there's a good chance they will want some money for him. "I don't think it's always necessary to pay for players in this day and age but in his case we'd have a look at it."
