Filip Valencic fires home fantastic winner as Notts County edge Crawley

New Notts County manager Jamie Fullarton got off to a winning start as a terrific second-half goal from Filip Valencic handed the Magpies a 1-0 victory at Crawley Town.

The hosts had won seven of their previous eight home games but Notts steadily grew in confidence to clinch a first away league win since the opening day of the season.

County's former Manchester United and West Ham keeper Roy Carroll came to his side's rescue in only the third minute by tipping over a goal-bound shot by Gavin Tomlin.

Crawley midfielder Ross Jenkins later set up Gwion Edwards with a fine ball into the area, but Edwards put an angled shot over.

The hosts threatened again when Carroll turned a Lewis Young shot round the post.

County failed to put pressure on the Crawley goal throughout the first half and midfielder Valencic drove well over from a rare attack shortly before the break.

The visitors began the second half with more promise and Ronan Murray had a shot blocked after Adam Campbell cleverly played him in.

County broke the deadlock in superb style when Filip Valencic bent in a tremendous 20-yard volley with his left foot after being set up by Jon Stead in the 62nd minute.
