Raith 2-1 Cowdenbeath: Report

15 March 2011 22:24
Baird winner puts Raith clear at the top John Baird struck six minutes from time as Raith beat struggling Cowdenbeath 2-1 in the Fife derby to go four points clear at the top of the First Division. Rovers were stunned by a home defeat to Partick at the weekend, but they responded with a battling victory courtesy of goals from Gregory Tade and leading scorer Baird either side of Greg Stewart`s equaliser. Both sides looked dangerous going forward and Raith goalkeeper Andrew McNeil produced an excellent save to deny Cowdenbeath midfielder Mark Ramsay after 34 minutes. But it was Raith who took the lead just before half-time when Mark Ferry crossed from the left and Tade was on hand to tuck the ball home with a neat right-foot finish. Jimmy Nicholl`s side were back on level terms five minutes after the break when Scott Linton`s cross picked out Stewart and the midfielder headed into the bottom corner. But the home side were not to be denied and they were back in front with six minutes remaining when Baird headed home Allan Walker`s inviting cross.
