    Wright handed armband

    14 Jul 2009 - 13:18:00

Coventry City have named Stephen Wright as their new captain following the departure of Scott Dann.

The 29-year-old former England Under-21 defender has only been at the club for one season, but has impressed manager Chris Coleman with his attitude and calm, dominant defending.

"Stephen is an experienced professional and, when he featured last year, we enjoyed our most successful spells," Coleman told the club's official website.

"He's a level-headed individual, a calm, solid defender who a lot of the younger lads look up to and can learn from.

"He's a leader with or without the armband, and I'm sure he'll do extremely well for the team."

Wright made 14 appearances for Liverpool after graduating through the club's academy, before playing 92 times for Sunderland in a six-year spell on Wearside. He has also had short spells at Crewe Alexandra and Stoke City.
