Sphinx Pull Off One Of The Greatest Wins In Their History
Sphinx through in Birmingham Senior Cup
Midland Alliance side Coventry Sphinx pulled off one of their greatest wins in their history with a 3-0 victory at Conference Premier side Solihull Moors.
Both sides lost players in the warm up in this Birmingham Senior Cup tie which was a repeat of the Second Round tie two years ago.
That night Sphinx were well beaten 4-1 but tonight, Luke Hopkins side played well even during a time when one of the floodlights went out, leaving a corner of the pitch not as well lit as the rest of the Damson Parkway ground.
Rikki Cutting fired wide from a half chance in the 27th minute. Solihull won a couple of corners before Harry White fired wide in the 39th minute.
Four minutes later, the Sphinx support were cheering when Sphinx took a 1-0 lead going into the interval thanks to Matt Bannister netting in the 43rd minute.
In the 57th minute, it was two when there was a scramble and after several attempts by several players, Adam Bilic fired home.
Solihull had a free kick hit the defensive wall and forced Sphinx keeper Carl O'Neill into a save but in the 67th minute, Sphinx went up the other end and there was Matt Bannister to hit the third.
The home side wasted a free kick late on which sailed out of the ground as Sphinx deservedly booked their place in Round Third with their best ever victory in the Birmingham Senior Cup and one of the great wins in their history.
