Players To Go As Financial Fair Play Comes In - Waggott

Clubs To Trim Their Playing Budgets
Coventry City will be having to off load some of their high earners when the Financial Fair Play rules come into effect, says City's Development Officer Steve Waggott.
Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Alan Poole, Mr Waggott said: “The big issue is Fair Play, getting as much money into the club as you can by commercial means so you get the highest possible percentage for your playing squad.
"I think the market has turned – the expectations of agents and players drop once you get to below mid-table in the Championship.
"We’ve got three or four members of the first-team squad whose contracts are up this summer and that’s not unique to Coventry by any means.
“Nearly all clubs will be trimming their budgets so there will be a lot of players available and it’s my job to get the best possible value for money.
"The development side is huge for all clubs and our Academy has been doing really well so will continue to get in quickly whenever good young talent becomes available.”
“If we want to renew or lengthen the contracts of players who are already on our books we can discuss that internally and draft contracts that can be agreed in principle, but until the transfer embargo is lifted we can’t put anything into force and the League wouldn’t allow us to register them.
“We obviously know when players we are monitoring are out of contract on June 30 and we can talk to them as well.
And, if you get permission from another club, you can speak to players who are already under contract to ascertain if there’s a figure that would be quite close to agreeing a deal or if they are looking for something that’s miles out of your reach.
“But I don’t hesitate to say that despite all the turbulence of the last few months, we still have a reputation with managers and players that is nothing short of astounding.
"They see us as a big club, the chance to take a step forward in their career.
“I have got to plan on the assumption that things will be settled over the next couple of months so we can go for our targets.
"And we are ready to move forward as soon as all the machinations off the pitch are sorted out."
