I'm Proud Of The Lads - Hopkins
Sphinx Boss On FA Cup Defeat
Coventry Sphinx manager Luke Hopkins has admitted to be proud of his players despite their 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Worcester City on Saturday.
Hopkins told the Coventry Telegraph: “I’m really proud of the lads, their first goal was against the run of play and we had three or four good chances ourselves so we were always confident that we could get something out of the game.
“Half time came at the wrong time for us because we were on top and building up to a goal, but it was the same afterwards until the red card killed the game – it was hard enough playing against a fit functional team from three leagues above us with 11 men.
“We changed our shape to give it a go because losing 4-0 in a cup game is the same as losing 1-0 so we had to go for it.
“The lads showed that they can complete with higher-league teams and I think even Worcester’s staff and players would agree 4-0 was a flattering score. But we learn from it and if we play like that in the league we will win more than we lose.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they were interested in a couple of our lads and if so I wouldn’t stand in their way. I’d pat them on the back and just let them know where they have come from in case it never worked out.
“Looking forward we have Tipton on Saturday and Shepshed on Monday so it’s not a confidence-building exercise this week in training, it’s keep doing the right things.”
Sphinx are back in action with a league game on Saturday at Tipton Town.
