Coventry City's central defender Richard Wood has spoken about his desire to score more goals now he has bagged his first of the season at Leeds on Tuesday.
Wood would have scored at The Ricoh last Saturday but for a spectacular, world class save from Lee camp in the Forest goal.
Last week Wood jested that he saw himself racing through the defence, into the box and firing a powerful shot into the top corner of the net. He was in such a confident mood that he would score he had a T-shirt printed with a message for his son, Graye's first birthday.
Speaking to the CT, Wood said, “That’s how I feel at the moment, I want to get goals. I like to think I would have scored against Forest had it not been for their keeper pulling off a great save and I think it is the part of my game that is coming.
“As you can see I have been planning it and I was so confident that I wrote a ‘Happy Birthday’ message under my shirt for my son on Tuesday. He’s obviously too young to understand at the moment but I will get a few clippings and enjoy showing him in the future.
“So it was all planned because I had a feeling I would score. Obviously I have to defend first but I want to be up there getting a few goals because we all have to help out the team and chip in at the moment.”
Like most central defenders, Wood usually scores with headers from set pieces, but at Leeds he was in the right place at the right time to get on the end of a fumble by Rabuchka in the Leeds goal to knock in the rebound.
“It was just a tap in really,”admitted Wood, who latched on to the fumbled stop after Cyrus Christie had put in a dangerous cross. “The keeper made a mess of the cross and I just knocked it in so I couldn’t have asked for more really. I am not bothered how they go in, just as long as I get a few goals.
“I was absolutely buzzing afterwards and couldn’t sleep a wink when I got home. I am just delighted to have scored to get us a point. I am from Ossett which is ten minutes up the road from Leeds where all my friends are Leeds fans. I was a season ticket holder for five or six years and I’ve always wanted to score against them.
“We had a free-kick just before and Sammy Clingan told me to get myself up because we had 30 seconds left or whatever, so I went up and Lukas challenged for the ball and it ended up wide and before I knew it it was in the box and I ran off celebrating.”
Wood has only recently returned to action after an injury lay off with a thigh muscle tear. He started the game against Forest, but couldn't complete the game and was substituted in the 78th minute because he was suffering from cramp.
Speaking about the game Wood said, “The first half was difficult and it was a bit shaky at times but I still think we played some decent stuff and then the gaffer had a word with us at half-time and confidence was high in the second half when we wanted to kick on, which we did.“We played some great stuff and if we can carry on like that we’ll be right up there. I thought we were always in control in the second half and I think we were due that last minute goal because we have had a few against us this season.
“The lads are full of confidence now and we want to get some momentum and an unbeaten run going, which we’ve talked about. We had a great result on Saturday and a great point away at Leeds and now we have to build on it with a result against Burnley.”
