Westwood won't be risked until he is fit
Boothroyd happy to use Quirke Coventry City boss Aidy Boothroyd has said that his first choice goalkeeper Kieren Westwood will not be rushed back in to the side if there is a risk of exacerbating his thigh injury as he wants the Irish international stopper fit for the season end run in. Boothroyd praised the 19 year old academy graduate Michael Quirke for his performance between the sticks at Doncaster last night and said he would not hesitate to use the youngster again. The City boss revealed he phoned round yesterday to check on the availability of emergency loan goalkeepers while Westwood was undergoing a fitness test, but was more than happy to use Quirke when it became apparent that Westwood was not fit enough to play. Quirke then went on to prove that Boothroyd's confidence in Quirke was not unfounded when he pulled of a series of good saves while doing the routine work more than adequately. Quirke was not at fault for Doncaster's equaliser, but he was nevertheless disappointed at not keeping a clean sheet in his first full game for his home town club. Boothroyd was in a better mood after last nights game than he was after the shambolic performance at The Ricoh last Saturday and joked, “If you’re a goalkeeper you don’t want to come and play for us, but the young lad did really well and I’m just disappointed that he didn’t get the clean sheet he deserved." “Keiren was close to playing but it was one of those situations where he could have done more damage and ended up missing six or seven games. "As much as we wanted him, I decided the best thing would be to give him more time." “I asked around a bit about loan keepers, but we decided to go with Michael and it proved a good decision, after all, that’s what Academies are for. If Keiren doesn’t make it on Saturday I’ll be more than happy to stick with Michael.”
