Westwood: I love it here

He want to stay and see what happens in the summer. Coventry City's star player Keiren Westwood, who, last week initiated talks to extend his contract to keep him at The Ricoh Arena, has said he is still waiting to hear from the board. Westwood has endeared himself even more to the fans with the comments he has made about wanting to stay at Coventry City. Without the highly rated and talented international goal keeper, the club could well have found itself in serious trouble at the wrong end of the table. The 25 year old Irish international goal keeper has attracted the attention of several Premiership clubs during the last season and is keen to know the intentions of the club and if they want to keep him at The Ricoh or to sell him to raise badly needed funds. As for Westwood himself, he is keen to stay and help the club to achieve the success he thinks the team is capable of. Speaking about his future, Westwood said, “I have got a year left and I went to ask the gaffer what the plans are regarding myself really rather than anything else. I wanted to know whether they have got plans to sell me because I have only got a year left or whether they are going to offer me a new deal. "The gaffer said he would get straight on the phone to the chairman, obviously looking to offer me a new deal. I have not heard anything since but I love it here. The lads are great, the gaffer is great and all the staff. I have known Franky Bunn since I was 12 years old so it certainly feels like home and I don’t see why I should have to move on just yet." “I obviously want to be part of things here and we have to see what happens in the summer. We don’t hold crystal balls and things don’t always work out the way they should, but we’ll have to see. It is a good club with some good players." "We have got a good squad and we are just lacking a bit of confidence at the minute, which everyone can see. “I don’t think we are a million miles away,  just look at the good run we went on when we were doing all the right things, but confidence has just got lower and lower but we have to build on the draw on Saturday which will hopefully put us back in the right direction.” Westwood has already been named Player of the Year for the London, Irish and Welsh supporters’ clubs and is in the forefront of the running for the  club's player of the year accolade. Looking back at last Saturday's game in particular and the recent poor run in general,  he reflected, “It was important to stop the run of defeats we have been having." "It would have been nice to turn the one point into three but, to be fair, if anyone had looked at this on the coupon they would probably have put it down as a draw; two evenly matched teams around each other. “Confidence is at an all time low at the minute and we need a bit of a pick-me-up. Maybe had we won it would have helped us go on to win the next two games, but we will keep going to the end. We have got a tough game at Middlesbrough and we’ll give it everything we’ve got.” Westwood  says that along with the whole team, he sympathises with the fans at the poor performances they have been serving up and says the entire team were unhappy with Saturday’s game. “The fans are obviously frustrated at the minute and we are as well,” he said ruefully. “We don’t like the situation but we are trying to do out best to dig ourselves out of this hole we are in to be fair, but you can only do that if you are all together with the supporters behind us." "There were a few boos about but that’s football and you have to deal with it.” When asked about  being awarded the Irish, Welsh and London supporters player of the year award, coupled to the strong possibility of claiming the title as club's player of the years he said: “I am delighted because any sort of award you welcome with open arms but it is not just about me, it is about getting three points on a match day. “The Irish fans couldn’t get across because of the situation with flights but I am sure they will get over for the Watford game.” Chairman of the South Wales fans, Colin Power said: “Keiren won this year’s award due to the combination of games played, performances, being consistent and winning most of our man of the match votes.”
