We Were Brilliant For 45 Minutes - Hopkins

Sphinx Boss On Win Over Dunkirk

Coventry Sphinx manager Luke Hopkins felt his side were brilliant for forty- five minutes of their 5-2 win against Dunkirk at Sphinx Drive on Saturday.

Hopkins told the Sphinx website: “This was a game of two halves, the first 45 minutes were brilliant, it took us 30 minutes to break through, but we had plenty of chances and if chances are going goals normally follow.

“The break came through a penalty won by Rickie Cutting, who was excellent again and a foul by ex Sphinx player Louis Guest was a nice early Xmas pressie with the penalty taken by Ash Cain and put home.

“it was five minutes later that good work out wide by Ash Cain saw him crossing for Cutting to get his goal. it could of been five or six and I think that would have been a fair result.

“We came out in the second half and I think the lads thought that the game was done but Dunkirk didn’t and pulled a goal back just after the hour mark.

“That gave us some life and we replied a minute later with a good team goal through Kiam Galdins.

With discipline high on the agenda for us, Aden Moore replaced the only booked player Rickie Cutting and got the goal he needed to get him going, with the keeper clearing onto his rear end and rebounding into the goal.

Just before time, we saw the Aden Moore we thought we had signed when the ball went into the box from good work from Jamie Towers on the right with his back to goal and it was a great touch and strike to give us a 5-2 win.

“So it was a happy day all around in the end, we conceded two from switching off but the game never really seemed in doubt. Personally, Dunkirk are normally a strong quick physical team and i thought we were going to be in a battle. as the game was played differently in two halves, we split the MOM between Ashley Cain  first half and Adam Sullivan second half.”

The games come fast for Sphinx and they are back in action tonight with a Midland Alliance fixture against Loughborough University at Sphinx Drive (7.45pm kick off).

“We go again tonight against Loughborough Uni,” said Hopkins. “Depending on their Uni team, the weather and the holiday period - you never know what you are going to get.

“We just need the same type of performance to make it 3 from 3 in the league and then we can hopefully carry on climbing back up the league.”
