Watching Michael Mifsud

A City's supporters view on watchinh Michael Mifsud once again Last week I went to Malta in my continuing quest to get to see a game in every European country (probably a forlorn hope but it keeps me out of trouble). I had selected it as it was an international weekend and Malta had a home game with Croatia. This would give me the opportunity to watch Michael Mifsud whose international goal scoring record stands at 30 goals from 86 matches after his two goals against Croatia and Georgia. No one who saw his performance at Old Trafford almost four years ago will ever forget it and I find it very sad the way he was driven out of the club by Chris Coleman after being forced to play wide on the right in his final season at the club. Watching him play as the central striker against Croatia made me see again what a good striker he is. Sadly he is now back playing in Malta (as were eight more of the starting line up) which is a great waste of his talents. He scored one very well taken goal, had one other very good chance which he just failed to convert and one second half goal disallowed for offside. With the greater sharpness which would have come with playing at the higher level which his ability deserves I am sure that he would have had more than just the one goal. As it is it was noticeable that when the Maltese team was announced his name got a louder cheer than anyone else and it would appear that he is an immensely popular figure in Malta. Certainly when you consider that Malta are perpetual whipping boys on the international stage and score very few goals his goalscoring record is phenomenal. I am not going to gloss over the way he (or perhaps more pertinently his agent) handled the proposed move to Bristol City but my abiding memory of the trip will be the fact that we were denied the chance to see Mifsud far more in a Coventry City shirt than we actually did.
