Thorn eases pressure off McDonald
New striker needs a couple of weeks to settle in Coventry City manager Andy Thorn has moved to reduce the burden of expectation placed on Cody McDonald's shoulders by the hopeful City supporters by saying he will need a couple of weeks to bed in with the style of play espoused by Thorn. The 25 year old striker, who joined Coventry from Norwich on the last day of the summer transfer window, has not played, or even trained with the Norwich first team for some time so is not fully fit yet. McDonald will play some part in a reserves friendly on Tuesday and will figure at some point in the home game against Derby County on Saturday. In his first training session with his new team mates last Thursday, he bagged a hat trick of goals, which immediately raised the hopes and expectations of the fans that he could be that elusive 20 goal a season striker. However Thorn has moved to lessen the pressure on McDonald's shoulders and said, “There’s no pressure on Cody. He can play off the shoulder and get in behind and he gives us options and added competition." “He trained with us for the first time last Thursday and there was a real buzz about the place. It’s amazing what a new signing does and everyone was right at it. Training went up a level." “He’s been out of the frame at Norwich and not training with the first team so although he is fit, it is just a matter of him getting his match sharpness." "He needs a couple of games to get going again but he looked pretty sharp in training. I can’t wait to get into the lad and bed him in to the way we play. He’s young and joins a young squad of proper talent." “He’ll play in a reserve game against Shrewsbury tomorrow and we’ll get him going and he’ll definitely be in the mix for the squad against Derby.”
