McSheffrey and Baker now fit, McPake close

Coventry City manager Andy Thorn will be relieved to have striker Gary McSheffrey and midfielder Carl Baker fit again and ready for the trip to Doncaster on Saturday.

McSheffrey has missed three games with a back injury while Baker has missed six games because of  an ankle ligament injury. His return will be especially welcomed as Thorn needs a ready made replacement to take the place of Gael Bigirimana during his three match ban for his straight red card on Saturday.

Both players are scheduled to play in a reserve game against Leicester today and they will be joined by defender James McPake as he continues his rehabilitation from a minor ankle operation.

It is unlikely that Richard Wood, who has a dead-leg and Gary Deegan who has a groin strain and are both receiving treatment, will play today, but may be fit for Saturday.

City boss Andy Thorn told the CT, “We have got a reserve game at Leicester today and Bakes and Sheffs will play 90 minutes, which is good.”

“It’s amazing because two weeks ago we were getting everyone out of the treatment room and ready to go and then, all of a sudden, I am having to look after people again and get games into them to get them fit, but that’s where we are at the moment.”

Thorn revealed that Clive Platt, who was rested for the Burnley game, is struggling to play too many games in quick succession.

He said, “We have got to be careful with Platty and how many games he can play in the space of a week, but he was training again this week and he’s buzzing to get back in around it, which he will on Saturday.

Speaking about the return of James McPake to full training, Thorn said, “James will play 90 minutes as well. He’s been out for a while and needs a few more games to get him going again and we need to get him back as quick as we can. He’s a strong boy and a leader and the sort of person we need around at the minute.

“Deegs had a groin injury from the Leeds game but he was good enough to go on the bench on Saturday because we were down to the bare bones, but I was reluctant to use him because I didn’t want to risk making the injury any worse.”
