Standing Up In Top Two Divisions Ruled Out

PL Spokesman does not want standing at top level matches

Coming days after Coventry City supporters stood watching the Sky Blues in perfect safety at Peterborough and despite years of campaigning by supporters groups including the Football Supporters Federation and now the Scottish Premier League, saying that it would consider applications to pilot safe standing triais, the Premier League has come out against having standing in the top two levels of the game.

All seater stadiums for the top two divisions were brought in following the passing of the Football Spectators Act, which had been lobbied for by seat manufacturers including the now defunct PEL PLC owned by former Coventry City Chairman and others with vested interests, following the Hillsborough Disaster in April 1989.

"The bottom line is that it (standing at matches) is illegal under the legislation that was brought in after Hillsborough," Premier League spokesman Dan Johnson said to ITV.

"We can't have standing in the Premier League and the Championship and it's not a situation we would like to see change."
