Coventry City manager Andy Thorn and coach Steve Harrison have been taking a fair bit of criticism as the Sky Blues sit rooted to the bottom of the Championship table and adrift of both Doncaster Rovers and Nottingham Forest, however, the players must take their share of the responsibility for the on the field mess the club is in.
Thorn and Harrison can only name the team of players they have available and tell them what formation and tactics to play but once the players are on the pitch, they are very much on their own.
It was not Thorn and Harrison whose back-pass led to Brighton’s opening goal.
It was not Thorn and Harrison who ran out and upended a Portsmouth player who was going nowhere.
It was not Thorn and Harrison who lost the ball in midfield, which allowed Peterborough to score.
It wasn’t Thorn and Harrison who have wasted chances, given away soft goals and missed penalties, which would have given us at least twelve extra points and a reasonable league placing rather than being rock bottom..
This season, has seen more mistakes from the more senior players in the squad in matches, than we have witnessed in a long time and this is something that needs to be eradicated.
Whilst the effort and commitment at Peterborough last week could not be faulted, you do have to question whether some of the senior players are prepared to battle in every game until the final whistle or will just go through the motions, doing what they have to do, as they are on long term contracts.
This giving players long-term contracts was wrong. Those contracts should have earned and only an extra year given out the day after the season finished with any player who was unhappy about it is free to try and find another club, not easy nowadays as players are ten a penny.
Andy Thorn, has said that he has met with Tim Fisher to discuss who his targets are when the transfer window reopens and whilst he is expecting a clearout. If he can bring in new players who will give 100% in every game, those for whom Coventry City Football Club is merely a job won’t hamper the progress of those who do want CCFC to return to former glories.
