Coventry City’s goalkeeper Joe Murphy had time during Tuesday’s home win over previously unbeaten Leighton Orient to stand back and watch his team mates tear the league leaders apart in their 3-1 win.

Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph, Murphy said, “It makes me laugh when I stand there on my goal line and watch them. It makes me appreciate the work they do off the ball, which is frightening, and what the gaffer has drilled into them.

“The other night it just worked to perfection and produced a thoroughly deserved win in very tough conditions which has to go down as the performance of the season.

“We looked really comfortable in the first half and limited them to long balls which we dealt with very well. The lads were outstanding, it’s one of the best teams I’ve played in for a good while because we’re so organised.

“I just stood there in awe because they put so much work in, it’s unbelievable. They should all be proud of themselves, for me it was just a joy to watch.

“The goals were top quality. Carl Baker did that four or five times last year, coming on to his left foot and scoring, and Franck Moussa’s was also superb.

“Everyone worked hard and I am sure Leon Clarke will be happy with his little tap-in, but the first two goals were sensational and we looked really comfortable which was the most pleasing thing – we coped with everything that they threw at us.”

However, Murphy was well prepared when called into action. With the score 1-0 in City’s favour, Orient were awarded a penalty which the Irish international goalkeeper saved David Mooney’s spot kick quite comfortably.

Murphy explained, “It was 1-0 at the time and we went on to score ten minutes after my save, so maybe it was the turning point.

"I was having a bit of banter with Oggy (goal keeping coach, Steve Ogrizovic) about it because I seem to change my mind a lot quite recently with penalties but he told me before that Mooney went top left in the penalty shoot-out but he has been going bottom right.

“It wasn’t a great penalty but the hold-up was nice and it kind of caught me in the midriff, but I was going that way all the time because he’s put his penalties that side recently.

“I am just disappointed with their late consolation goal when I came out and it was maybe the wrong decision because I really wanted a clean sheet. But take nothing away from the lads, they were outstanding.

“Orient have had a great run and gone 12 games unbeaten before the other night. They are going to have a couple of off days but whether that was the case on Tuesday or just that we were very, very good, I don’t know.

"We played really well and Russell Slade (Leighton Orient manager) mentioned a couple of weeks ago when we played them that we were the best side to have played at their place, so we have to take a lot of credit for that, but the gaffer has to take a lot of credit for the way the players are working and hopefully we can go on a decent run now.”
