Morrison: We can't let it fizzle out
Striker urges team mates on Coventry City striker Clinton Morrison has urged his fellow team mates not to let the season fizzle out like they did last year. Coventry City failed to win any of their last eight games last season. Morrison, who is in the proccess of negotiating a contract renewal at the club, believes the play offs are out of reach, but he wants the Sky Blues to finish as high in the table as possible. The 30 year old Morrison, who is City's leading goal scorer this season, said, “Obviously we have to liven up because even though we can’t make the play-offs we have got to win as many games and finish as high as we can so we can kick on next season. Last Saturday’s game was a frustrating and boring one to watch in the first half." “It was one of those games that had an end to the season feel to it and all the lads on the bench were saying it looked like a pre season game, but we can’t let it fizzle out like it did last year." “That was just embarrassing when we didn’t win for the last eight games but hopefully we will keep going and get back to winning ways against Derby. I said to the lads before the gaffer came in at half time on Saturday that we have got to liven up and can’t let things fade away." "We can’t let the last six games fade into nothing and for us to finish in 14th or 15th. If we finish seventh and just outside it then it is a good season because no-one would have expected us to be there or thereabouts.” Morrison has started the last two games on the bench and is hoping that manager Chris Coleman will give him a start against Derby County on Saturday at The Ricoh. He added, “I am disappointed not to start the last couple of games and I spoke with the manager and he told me his reasons why and I said ‘fair enough,’ because you have to accept it, but it was good to go on at half time and hopefully it livened things up a bit in the second half." “We scored a route one goal and the gaffer said that this week we are going to work on getting more crosses in the box for the strikers to get on the end of because we are always up there waiting in the box and they don’t seem to come in." “We can’t say we are getting loads of clear cut chances compared to other teams in the top six who seem to be creating chances for fun, so it is obviously something we need to work on at training and hopefully the gaffer will help us.” Morrison then spoke about the last few home games of the season, Derby first,then Preston and Watford on the last day of the season, saying he wants to win them all, especially as the Sky Blues have only gained two points at home in recent fixtures. “We have only taken a couple of points from the last three home games and it is disappointing,” he said. “We need to be picking up more points at home where we were doing well before. It is a big game against Derby this week and then a tough one away at Reading on Monday, so it is a big week coming up." "We have had a few days off to rest because the gaffer said we looked tired and hopefully we can kick on this weekend. So he has said we are going to work on getting the ball in the box.” He ruefully added, “I haven’t had many chances to be fair. I hit the post at West Brom and then had one chalked off for offside on Saturday, which I didn’t think it was, but that’s the way it is going."
