McSheffrey is back
Striker is Boothroyd's first signing Coventry City managers Aidy Boothroyd is set to unveil his first singing later today. That signing will be of former fans favourite Gary McSheffrey. The Coventry born 27 year old McSheffrey was sold to Birmingham City in 2006 in a bid the pay some of their bills. It is understood that McSheffrey has undergone and passed intensive medical tests and fitness trials before being offered a deal to return to his hometown club. His fitness and injuries during his time at Birmingham has been a cause for concern and had, in part, led to his limited appearances under Alex McLeish. McSheffrey had been told earlier this year that his contract at St Andrews would not be renewed when it expires on July 1st. The player had been on loan at Leeds United and had been tipped to sign a permanent deal with the Yorkshire club. Other clubs have also been linked with the striker, who can also play as a left winger, but Coventry would always be the favourites to secure his signature should they want to sign him. It is believed that Boothroyd will unveil McSheffrey as his first signing for the Sky Blues at a press conference later today. McSheffrey did well under Birmingham City's previous manager Steve Bruce, but fell out of favour under Alex McLeish. He suffered from a persistent knee problem that eventually required surgery and on his return he failed to secure much first team football so and was sent out on loan to Leeds and Nottingham Forest. When McSheffrey made his debut for Coventry City against Aston Villa at the age of 16 years and 198 days on 27 February 1999, he was the youngest ever player to play in The Premiership, City won that game 4-1.
