Christmas Day is now a football free day in England, Scotland and Wales and now Northern Ireland after the traditional Christmas morning Steel and Sons Cup Final was brought forward by twenty four hours. However, upto 1959, matches on Christmas Day were part of the fixture list and Coventry City always did well when they played matches on Christmas Day.
One of Singer FC's first games on Christmas Day was a 5-1 win over Clitheroe in 1895 in a friendly. Friendlies were also played against Rudge Whitworth and a Cov & North Warwick League in 1901 before Singers lost 1-0 at Small Heath Reserves in a Birmingham League game in 1902. Other Birmingham League games played on Christmas Day saw Singers win twice against Dudley, once against Kidderminster and a defeat to Aston Villa Reserves.
Now as Coventry City and in the Southern League, City drew with Swindon 1-1 at home in 1908, lost 2-1 at home to Bristol Rovers in 1911, beat Portsmouth 2-0 at home the year after and lost to Northampton 1-0 in 1913.
With Coventry City now in the Football League. They played a total of 25 games on Christmas Day with twenty one of them have been at Highfield Road. The biggest victory was a 7-1 win over Wolves in 1922. This was one of sixteen wins with the last coming in City's last game on Christmas Day in 1959 and saw a 5-3 victory against Wrexham.
