Baker wants City to stay in Coventry

Coventry City captain Carl Baker has said that it is vital that the club stays in Coventry.

Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner at the CCPFA Gold Day at Stoneleigh yesterday, Baker said: “I’ve tried to bury my head in the sand as much as possible but it’s impossible because people are talking about it everywhere you go.

“You pick up the Telegraph and it’s in there so I do know a little bit about it and for us, we want to stay at the Ricoh. I think it’s vital that we stay in the city.

“Obviously the fans want that and I am sure the players want that, but at the end of the day it’s Sisu who own the club and we have to respect that and whatever decision they make. If we have to play out of the city, we have to respect that.

“We get paid to be professional footballers and as soon as we put that shirt on, whether that is playing on a park somewhere or at the Ricoh, we have to give it our all.

“It would be hard playing at Walsall or wherever. I’m not going to lie, I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to play out of the city, I don’t want to play at Walsall’s pitch, Birmingham’s pitch, Nuneaton’s pitch, wherever.

“I will do if that’s what it comes to and I am not going to sulk and moan about it. I will still get down and work as hard as I possibly can to do what I have to do. I will always give 110 per cent but, ideally, we’d want to stay at the Ricoh.”

Like many of the support, Baker admitted to a concern of playing on an over-used pitch and commented: “At its best the Ricoh’s a lovely pitch and if we share with the likes of Walsall, come December the pitch will be knackered.

“I know the gaffer wants to get the ball down and play and that could affect the points we put on the table because we need a nice pitch to play the football we want to play. And hopefully that will be at the Ricoh because if not it could change the way the gaffer wants to play further on in the season.

“But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. I am just going to report back for pre-season training on the 28th and hopefully we’ll know by then what’s going on.

“If we’re playing away from the Ricoh we’ll be upset but we’ll deal with it. If we’re at home, fantastic, and we’ll kick on from there.”
