Gunnarsson to speak with Chairman on return from Denmark

Decision time for Midfielder Coventry City's Icelandic international Aron Gunnarsson is set to speak to club chairman Ken Dulieu when the player returns from the UEFA European under 21 international Championships later this week. Iceland went out of the competition at the weekend on goal difference despite beating hosts Denmark 3-1 on Saturday night and so now the Iceland Players will return home. Gunnarsson played in two of Iceland's games, but was sent off in the first game against Belarus  which meant he missed the second game against Switzerland through suspension. Now his international duty is over, Gunnarsson will have to decide whether he is going to accept the contract offer on the table from Coventry City, or if he will reject it and move elsewhere. The City manager Andy Thorn revealed he had been in touch with the 22 year old Gunnarsson while he has been in Denmark. Thorn said, “He’ll speak to the chairman when he’s finished in Denmark and make his decision then and we’ll take it from there. I have spoken to Aron, just asking him about his sending off and how the game went last weekend. He didn’t think it was a sending off but he missed just the one game.” Thorn needs to know whether Gunnarsson is going to leave or stay at Coventry as soon as possible so he can decide on possible replacements before the start of pre-season training. He is optimistic and hopeful that Gunnarsson will accept the new deal and remain at Coventry for another three years. If he does agree to sign, Thorn has said he can have some time off to take a holiday before returning for pre-season training Thorn said, “If he does sign I’ll give him a day off for having played in the tournament! “No, he’ll get some time off while we’re in Portugal and then he’ll hook up with us further down the line because he’ll obviously need a little break.”
