David McGoldrick fails to get swansong performance for Coventry City

David McGoldrick failed to get his swansong performance as Coventry City went down to a 1-0 home defeat to Shrewsbury Town.

The striker, who has notched eighteen league and cup goals for the Sky Blues whilst on loan from Nottingham Forest took his place in City's starting line up whilst James Bailey, who is back at the Ricoh Arena on loan for the rest of the season and Leon Clarke who is on a 28 day loan from Charlton Athletic were included on the bench.

There was plenty of effort and commitment from Mark Robins side but today luck was not with them and this was typified in the 20th minute when Gary McSheffrey thundered a shot against the crossbar which hit Shrews custodian Chris Weale and was cleared.

Graham Turner's side, who had the ability to slip in an extra midfielder when the need arose, should have gone ahead in the 33th minute, when Marvin Morgan missed out on a cross by a matter of inches before Weale made a great save to beat away a Moussa header.

Leon Clarke was given in his debut in the 53rd minute and headed wide from a McSheffrey cross a minute later but the visitors grew stronger creating two chances and then taking the lead in the 61st minute when Marvin Morgan netted.

James Bailey joined the action for his 19th appearance in City colours and played his part in City creating more chances. The best of which saw McSheffrey miss when clean through after being played onside but today was not the day for City and for the first time since Mark Robins took over, they failed to score and went down to a second successive defeat against Shrewsbury.
