Sensational Jacob Murphy treble sends Coventry City top

Jacob Murphy struck a sensational hat-trick in 10 first-half minutes to send Coventry to the top of League One with a 4-1 win over Gillingham.

City had controlled the opening half but could have fallen behind in the 34th minute as Cody McDonald's header was cleared off the line by Jim O'Brien.

From that clearance, the home team broke down the other end and Murphy took advantage of a mistake by Adedeji Oshilaja to round Stuart Nelson before finishing.

Murphy then won the corner that saw Ryan Kent cross for Ben Turner, back at Coventry on loan from Cardiff, to power home a header in the 37th minute.

O'Brien played Murphy clear in the 41st minute and the on-loan forward once again went round Nelson before finding the back of the net.

And the young Norwich man completed an amazing first half when he side-footed Chris Stokes' cross into the top corner in the 44th minute.

Adam Armstrong could have extended Coventry's lead at the start of the second half but hit the post before Bradley Dack fired home a 63rd-minute consolation for the visitors.
