Northampton Town dump Coventry out of FA Cup

Northampton Town provided an FA Cup shock as they dumped Coventry City out of the competition with a well-deserved 2-1 victory.

The Cobblers made the perfect start but then rallied to claim victory after in-form League One Coventry had pulled level.

Nicky Adams fired a free kick delivery into the box after five minutes to fortuitously open the scoring. The former Bury midfielder's intended cross appeared to evade everybody and bounced past Coventry keeper Lee Burge into the net.

It was the ideal start for Northampton but Coventry had the perfect response when on-loan Jacob Murphy equalised just five minutes later, powering home from 25 yards.

The home side may have expected to add to their lead but Northampton did not allow the equaliser to rattle them.

They were causing the home side problems down the flanks and made it count in the 17th minute when a centre from Lawson D'Ath was met by skipper Marc Richards to head home his 10th goal of the season.

Northampton remained resolute in the second half and their lead never looked threatened.
