Newport end Coventry's 100 per cent winning start to season

Coventry failed to maintain their 100 per cent winning start to the League Two season after a 1-0 defeat at home to Newport.

City goalkeeper Liam O'Brien bundled Reece Cole's long range effort into his goal after 53 minutes to give the Exiles their first win of the campaign.

It capped an excellent smash and grab win for Newport as they successfully stifled the Sky Blues, who had picked up six points from their first two games.

County made a bright start and only the post denied Robbie Willmott after Cole had sprung the offside trap in the 25th minute while on-loan Bournemouth forward Joe Quigley failed to make the most of a header after finding space just before half-time.

At the other end Mickey Demetriou made a brilliant lunging block in first-half stoppage time to keep out Marc McNulty, before Stuart Beavon's follow-up was scrambled away.

The visitors broke the deadlock shortly after the resumption when Cole's tame effort crept under O'Brien.

Joe Day pulled off a stunning one handed save in the 65th minute to palm away Tony Andreu's curling effort and preserve Newport's slender lead.

Substitute Lamar Reynolds shot into the side-netting in the closing stages, before Day ensured County would walk away with all three points after brilliantly tipping over a Jodi Jones effort.
