Former Coventry City youngster Greg Abbott has been named as the assistant manager to Shaun Derry at Notts County.

The Magpies opted for Derry who was playing on loan at Millwall from Queens Park Rangers instead of Steve Hodge who managed the team which was beaten 3-0 by Coventry City on Saturday.

Abbott, who is originally from Potters Green in Coventry, has been out of work since being sacked as manager of Carlisle United.

Notts County's board have admitted that they are taking a risk in appointing Derry, a former Notts County player, as their new manager and County chairman Ray Trew told the Press Association; "What Shaun has achieved as a player, coupled with the leadership that he has shown throughout his career, make him the ideal candidate for a managerial role and he made it clear that he wanted that role to be with his hometown club.

"There are question marks over his credentials, simply because this will be his first managerial role, I know that, but there are doubts with every managerial appointment and we, as a board, have to put our faith in who we think is the right man for the job."
