At Bedworth United in a game which could decide the fate of the Womens Premier League title, Leeds had the better of the chances early on. Leah Galton was a big threat to the Sky Blues firing over on in the 19th minute and eight minutes later she sent a right-footed shot onto the bar, followed a minute later, by Faye Birkby doing the same thing.
Against a Leeds side which had strength and quality and included former Sky Blue Emma Lipman, City were always on the counter-attack but after Galton had struck the bar and Tanya Rich fired home the loose ball only for it to be ruled offside, the Sky Blues had their best chance.
It came in the 43rd minute when Courtney Sweetman-Kirk was adjudged to have been pushed by referee Lisa Rashid and a penalty to City was awarded. Katy Ward stepped up and struck Draycott’s left hand post. The ball bounced back to Ward who then tapped it into the net. However, as no other player has touched the ball, the goal was ruled out and there was still parity at the break.
Jade Formaston went close with a header as the second half started but in the 54th minute, Leeds won the game when Clare Huegett crossed for Hayley Sharp to slot the ball past Sue Wood.
Courtney Sweetman-Kirk had two chances but City who travel to new league leaders Sunderland who won 4-1 at Barnet next Sunday, were unable to get back into the match.
Speaking after the game, City Ladies coach Paul Cudby said that he felt his side worked hard but that Leeds had a bit more quality in the final third than his team did.
