Coventry City Ladies avenged their defeat at Reading in the first game of the season with a 1-0 win against the Royals this afternoon.

At Bedworth United, Coventry City Ladies held Reading early on before the Sky Blues striker Maria Gauntlett started to shine. She fashioned two shots on goal before sending over a sublime cross for Jade Formaston to head home from close range put the Sky Blues in the 18th minute.

Unfortunately, it was not to last as Gauntlett, who had been dragging Reading defenders all over the place, was taken out and injured ligaments in her left knee as she hit the deck.

City played on with ten players until Kerry Bartlett came on and with . Katy Male chipping in with a good effort, City were worth their lead at the break.

The Sky Blues continued to look for another goal in the second half against a Reading side relying on the counter-attack.

Bartlett flicked a free kick and substitute Danni Saulter fired at Moloney before Reading attacked at the other end and Sue Wood, who did not have to make a save in the game, made a smart block to deny Nicola Watts in the 64th minute.

Courtney Sweetman-Kirk hit the bar before another injury forced off defender Katy Steele in the 66th minute.

The City players were like the walking wounded on the final whistle with Helen Dermody also picking up a knock but they had worked hard for another three points which lifts them up to second in the table.

City Ladies are away to Charlton Athletic, who won 3-0 at Nottingham Forest, next Sunday.  Kick off at Thamesmead Town is at 2pm.
