Chesterfield game was a deliberate test

Thorn pleased with profitable outing Coventry City manager Andy Thorn thought last nights 2-2 draw at Chesterfield was the most profitable game so far this pre-season i terms of lessons learnt. Coventry City took the lead twice though strikes from Hussey and Jutkiewicz, but were pegged back with two goals from Morgan. Thorn opted to play most of his players for he full 90 minutes while Chesterfield made the most of their substitutes. The idea was to test the fitness and durability of his players against fresh legs and different tactics as the game wore on and Thorn was pleased with how his players coped, especially in the closing ten minutes of the game when defensively Coventry were hard pressed. Speaking to the club's website Thorn explained, "Chesterfield changed their system a bit in the second half and we could have done the same to combat that but it's not about results. I wanted the boys to get some tired legs and get used to battling through difficult periods. That's what was important tonight. "They threw plenty of fresh legs on and we could have done the same but I wanted the lads to play through it and get their fitness levels up and they did that so all in all I was very pleased." The 2-2 draw means that Coventry are still unbeaten in their pre-season campaign with two wins and two draws and with the sternest test yet to come when Premier League new boys Norwich visit The Ricoh Arena on Saturday. Thorn was at pains to say that the teams he has picked to start so far are no indication of how he sees his starting eleven for the opening game of the season when near neighbours Leicester City visit The Ricoh on August 6th. Thorn was asked if he would be keeping his cards close to his chest about his preferred starting eleven and he said, "Absolutely. We won't start talking about starting line ups until the week leading up to the Leicester game so everything is still all to play for for the boys." "Norwich will be another tough test for us, it's Premier League opposition, but it's still all about us and all of the players still have the chance to make a case for themselves."
