Club Finally Pay Off Trio

Coventry City manager Steven pressley has said that club owners SISU paid a significant amount in order to pay off the contracts of Kevin Malaga, Steven Jennings and Gary McSheffrey.

On Monday night, the club finally paid agreeable sums to the trio who had turned down an initial derisory offer of 20% of their remaining contract and City boss Steven Pressley told the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner: “The players were well paid in their compromise agreements to change that. I know the club has received a lot of criticism over the period but in terms of trying to change the culture, they have invested significantly on the compromise agreements of our players.

“In all negotiations there comes a point of compromise so both sides had to move to find the agreeable figure.

“Beyond the window for the players, with the exception of going on loan, which we weren’t keen for them to do, they would have found themselves tied to the club until January.

"But taking a compromise in the window has allowed them to seek new challenges and I’m pleased because when we returned in June we had a number of players we had to try to move out of the club and doing that is great business.

“The circumstances are unfortunate but we had to try to create a new start for the club based around our own new players and so we had to take action. And now, hopefully we can start a new chapter.”

Speaking about the negotiation, Pressley said: “Gary’s went down to the last few moments.

“He came in quite late in the evening and spoke to Steve Waggott. They had obviously negotiated on the phone and then the players came in. Kevin’s was done quite early in the day and then Steve Jennings and Gary were done in the last hour of the window.

“There is scope now to add to the squad. The window is passed but there are still players out there who are free agents who have negotiated themselves out of their contracts, and we have the loan market coming soon as well. We will assess market now see what’s available.”
