City Ladies come from two goals down to snatch a draw

Coventry City Ladies snatched a last gasp 2-2 draw at WPL league leaders Sunderland this afternoon

Paul Cudby left his new signing Mary Earps from Doncaster Belles on the bench for this game at the Hetton Centre in Sunderland.

On a grey and drizzly day in Sunderland, the match started off following an well observed minute's silence to remember all those who have served and suffered in conflicts.

League leaders Sunderland who won 4-1 at Barnet last Sunday, attacked first and scored through Williams.

City then had the ball in the net when Courtney Sweetman-Kirk nodded on and flicked over for Kerry Bartlett in behind to strike home. Unfortunately she was flagged offside.

A heavy tackle came in on Jade Formaston and she had to be replaced by Katy Steele before Bartlett flicks through Ward's throw and Sweetman-Kirk curled the ball just wide of far post.

Straight after the restart, Sunderland hit a second when Mead followed up to score after Wood had parried a shot following a needless free kick.

City might have been two goals down but Milly Durrant was in no mood to lose this game easily and she chased her own block tackle to get through for a one on one only to show too much to the keeper. Seconds later, Durrant was on hard to stab home after a Leanne McKenna header was saved.

McKenna headed over from a corner after a Sweetman-Kirk volley had been blocked and Sunderland went close at the other end.

Coventry kept battling with Bartlett and Dermody trying their luck from distance and a great save from the keeper to deny Barber.

They deserved something for their efforts and in the dying seconds, Courtney Sweetman-Kirk rounded the keeper to score and earn City a point.

City  Wood, Durrant (Mellor), Ward, Simpkins (Farrow), Lynch, McKenna, Formaston (Steele), Dermody, Barber, Bartlett, Sweetman-Kirk
