Barton's Been Unfortunate - Pressley

City Boss On Adam Barton

Coventry City manager Steven Pressley feels that Adam Barton has been unfortunate.

Barton has been putting in some good performances for City U21's and was called up to play against Brentford on Sunday to replace the injured Carl Baker.

However, Barton was replaced at half-time and City manager Steven Pressley told the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner: “Like every player he’ll be disappointed but it was just a tactical decision that I made. At the time I felt we needed a bit more impetus in the forward area and I thought Mathieu Manset would give us that.

“I asked Adam to play in an unfamiliar position and he worked hard within that position, but I just felt we needed a little bit extra in the final third.

“Adam’s a fantastic football player, but he’s a central midfield player.

"When Carl Baker came out of the team earlier in the season I put Billy Daniels in there because, for me, Adam is a playmaker and he plays from a central position where he is a dictator of the play.

“He’s not such a wide player so I asked him to play in an unfamiliar role and he worked very hard in it, but I felt we needed something a little bit different in the advanced areas.

"So that was no reflection on Adam as a player, it’s just we needed something different.

“He’s been doing really well and Adam being left out has nothing to do with his performances.

"His performances in the Under-21s have been excellent and his performances throughout the pre-season were excellent too, but I had to pick two from four at the time to play in the middle and John Fleck and Conor Thomas have played, in my opinion, really well in those positions.

"So he’s just been unfortunate, and that’s it.”
