Coventry Sphinx went out of the FA Vase in a highly controversial 5-1 defeat at Westfields.

Sphinx were delayed getting to this FA Vase Second Round game by someone threatening to throw themselves off a bridge on the M42 and forced Sphinx boss to start without a number of key players.

Sphinx who had a good backing of support, were a goal down in the tenth minute when a cross came from the right and the ball went in off Adam Bilic.

On a ground where Sphinx wins are few are far between, two minutes later, Westfields attacked through James Insall and Cuss swept in.

Matty Fowler had a corner pushed over for a corner in the 17th minute but four minutes later, Sphinx were back in the game when Matty Bannister started a move which saw him dive ala Keith Houchen to head home.

Ricky Fletcher got onto a free kick but his header was pushed away for a 30th minute corner. That led to Aden Moore going close and another chance going over the bar.

Westfields responded with two chances before a great run and shot by Kiam Galdings sent the ball a shade over the crossbar in the 43rd minute.

Cain sent over a free kick and was involved in the first move of the second half which saw Matty Bannister fire over.

After only 96 seconds, Matty Fowler was sent off for a second bookable for a very harsh foul on Insall who got up to score the resulting penalty, given by the assistant referee on the dug out side.

In the 53rd minute, it was four when the Sphinx defence were split and Brad Birch was played in for a tap.

Westfields had a goal ruled out for offside before Luke Hopkins brought on Adam Sullivan in place of Adam Bilic.

In the 58th minute, a fifth goal did come when Jamie Insall beat the helpless Pratley,

Birch hit the bar with a rasping shot before he was sent off for a second bookable for an elbow on the Sphinx keeper who was unable to continue.

This launched the Westfields bench into a tirade of abuse against the referee who had been appalling.

Ash Jackson went in goal with Tom Dyke coming on for Pratley who was exceedingly groggy.

Westfields hit the bar before their keeper Conor took the ball outside of the area and did not even get a talking to.

In the 72nd minute, Mr Walker from Redditch sent off Cuss for a shove on Jackson.

The game was end to end but in the 77th minute, Jamie Insall was able to complete his hat-trick when he won a race for the long ball over the top and fired into the empty net.

Cutting had a shot saved from a Cain cross as did Bannister.

A corner followed for Sphinx who kept on the pressure but they were out in what was a bad day at the office.
