Is the Colorado Rapids manager the coolest in world football? We think so

The MLS doesn’t have the best of reputations in this country. In fact, its reputation is completely built around being seen as a retirement home for once great footballers who have already won all there is to win in the “big” leagues.

They’re working hard to change that image in America, but the league is still a bit of a mystery to us over here. We know that David Beckham played for LA Galaxy – where Steven Gerrard is heading off to this year – and that Thierry Henry was with the New York Red Bulls, but that’s about it. Sky Sports have recently started showing the MLS so there’s a good chance their reputation might be enhanced a little when people get to watch it more.

One man is enhancing reputations all on his own though. His name is Pablo Mastroeni and he’s the coolest football manager you’ve never seen. Need proof?

That moustache and bow tie combo is unheard of in the world of football management, but we like that Mastroeni is bucking the trend. Admittedly it’s unlikely to catch on over here – can you imagine the abuse Garry Monk would receive if he turned up like that? And Tim Sherwood already gets enough grief for wearing a gilet.

Let’s look at that moustache again.

The envy is real, as it clearly is with Rapids fans too. They’ve taken to impersonating Mastroeni.

He’s set new goals. We’ll never again look at Jose Mourinho or Carlo Ancelotti in the same way. Sure, they’re cool, but are they Mastroeni cool?

Move over Dunga, there’s a new hipster manager in town.
