Colchester United boss Geraint Williams accepted that his side are almost certain to be relegated from the Championship, following their 2-1 home defeat by Sheffield Wednesday.
The U's are now a massive ten points adrift of safety and face dropping back into League One.
Williams said: "I'm very proud of the players because everyone gave 100 per cent and I think that our fans could see that we put pressure on them.
"We got ourselves in front, but we then conceded two soft goals to let them back in it.
"We're not down at the moment but it will take a heck of a fight to get out of it.
"There are still 27 points and an awful lot of pride left to play for between now and the end of the season."
