Colchester United manager Geraint Williams was pleased to see his side move off the bottom of the table with a narrow victory over fellow strugglers Preston North End on Tuesday.
Johnnie Jackson's late strike secured a 2-1 victory for the U's which enabled them to leapfrog Scunthorpe United at the foot of the Championship table.
Colchester had taken the lead midway through the second half through Scott Vernon's spot-kick before Neil Mellor's strike had restored parity.
"We almost snatched a draw from the jaws of victory again," said Williams.
"It was a tough, tough game and we let them back in it but we came up trumps and kept going until the final whistle and we got our reward.
"That just shows the spirit of the lads and we knew it was important to get a win.
"It was a great strike by Johnnie Jackson and it was always going to take something special to win the game."
