Colchester United have been rocked by the news that star striker Jamie Cureton has handed in a transfer request, which has been immediately rejected.
The 31-year-old was the leading scorer in the Championship last season, netting 23 goals as the U's made an instant impact following their promotion.
Cureton formed a deadly partnership with Chris Iwelumo, who has already quit Layer Road to join Charlton Athletic.
"Having thought very carefully over my future, I have decided to ask for a transfer away from Colchester United," Cureton BBC Essex.
"The club's failure to re-sign several key players has convinced me to make this decision.
"I remain very ambitious in my football career and it is clear to me that my ambitions are not matched by the club."
However, the U's responded quickly, with boss Geraint Williams telling the club's official website: "I stress that we do not want to sell Jamie - we want to keep him at the club.
"We would like him to stay and we want him to be happy to stay at Colchester United. To that end, we will be continuing talks with him about extending his contract."
