U's rebuffed by Barrett

Colchester United look set to fail with a bid to sign central defender Adam Barrett from Essex rivals Southend United.

The 27-year-old has been the subject of an offer from the U's following the Blues' relegation from the Championship, but Barrett says he is more than happy at Roots Hall.

He told the club's official website: I'm happy at Southend and I don't want to go anywhere else.

"Everyone knows how much I love playing for the club and my agent approached the chairman during the summer to try to get my contract extended.

"I don't know too much about what's gone on other than the fact a bid has been turned down. It's flattering, but I've been told I'm staying and that's fine by me."
