Hackney makes U's switch

Colchester United have snapped up Carlisle United midfielder Simon Hackney for an undisclosed six-figure fee.

The 24-year-old had scored 17 goals in 141 appearances for the Cumbrians, but has now opted to head south to take up an offer from the U's.

Colchester boss Paul Lambert told the club's official website: "I saw him in action for Carlisle against Crewe while I was out of work at the beginning of the season.

"I have had him watched since and he is another, like Marc Tierney, who I felt could do a job at this level.

"He is direct and will add to what we already have in the squad here."
