Baldwin grateful for fresh chance

Colchester United defender Pat Baldwin has spoken of his delight at being handed the chance to prove himself this season by new manager John Ward.

Baldwin had been released by Ward's predecessor Aidy Boothroyd and was left searching for a new club.

But the former Cheltenham Town and Carlisle United boss offered him a timely boost.

Speaking to reporters, Baldwin said: "I thought I'd played my last game for Colchester and was preparing to look for a new club this summer when Aidy Bothroyd left and John Ward took over.

"I got the phone call from John on the morning of my wedding as well, so it was a great day all round really.

"It was a surprise, but a very nice surprise and I hope that I can repay that faith shown in me this season."
