Colchester manager John Ward was delighted with his players despite seeing them pegged back three times by Charlton in a barnstorming 3-3 draw. Both sides ended with 10 men, with Colchester midfielder David Perkins first to go after he handled on the goalline and Charlton striker Paul Benson seeing red for his 88th-minute challenge on home defender John White. Goals from Matt Heath and Andy Bond were cancelled out by two Johnnie Jackson penalties for Charlton against his former club, and after Anthony Wordsworth had given Colchester the lead for a third time, Benson drilled home another equaliser in the 76th minute. Ward said: "I'm absolutely delighted for my group of players. I think Phil (Parkinson) is more upset with the decisions than I am. "But for us to respond to the sending off in the manner that we did really set this place going. The supporters appreciated what we did. We spent a period of three weeks (without a game) passing the football. "It gave us a good opportunity to get back to what we want to do and we played with a real energy. For us to pick it up so quickly and maintain it, I'm really pleased. There's a massive commitment in the dressing room that I see every day and it was a fantastic effort."
