Colchester United chief executive Steve Bradshaw has said Aidy Boothroyd was the best man to take the club forward.Boothroyd was unveiled as United's new boss on Wednesday, replacing Paul Lambert who left for Norwich in August.

"We whittled down a shortlist of very successful and experienced managers and Aidy stood out head and shoulders above the rest," Bradshaw told BBC Essex.

"He'll provide the club a level of profile and also a winning mentality to take us to the next level."

Bradshaw felt Boothroyd's Premiership experience with Watford would be a huge benefit to both the U's players and the club as a whole.

"He also has a real team ethic which is something we all want to buy into."

"This is a guy who wants to do the very best he can - he wants to help Colchester to achieve all it can achieve," he added.

"But he also wants to do it with a smile on his face and I think the fans will appreciate that and it's certainly something the staff around the building have already noticed."
