Perkins: Competition always helps
Perkins knows he is not guaranteed a starting berth following the arrivals of David Fox and Ashley Vincent over the summer.
But the former Rochdale man is up for the challenge and knows he cannot afford to let his standards slip.
He told the Gazette: "I think it's helped that I've been a Colchester player for a year now. This is a really big season for me and Colchester and it's time to crack on.
"It's a really competitive squad and that's a good thing.
"You have to keep playing as well as you possibly can, otherwise you will be out of the team straight away."
