Notts were two-up eight minutes before the break when Connor Clifford's corner evaded everyone and hit Colchester defender Clarke on its way in. Nelson was the busier in the second half as he twice saved well from Mooney. County's Lee Hughes also came alive as he saw a clever a chip turned away, while Odejayi missed Colchester's best chance when he got free, but stabbed wide.
